‘You are not alone’: University student launches event for immigrant teens in Canada
A university student who understands what it's like to be an immigrant teenager has created a conference to help other immigrant youth discover what is all possible in Canada. "The Bridging Paths Conference is a day dedicated for immigrant and first-generation teens, ages 14-18," says the founder, Rebekah Soneye. "It's a day we've put together to kind of help them through their journey of being an immigrant teen in Canada." The conference is happening on Oct. 11 at 340 Provencher Blvd. Space is limited and while the conference is free, registration is required. "We're going to share a lot of resources, talk about academic success, and talk about navigating life as an immigrant teen in Canada." .embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; } Soneye knows firsthand what it's like to be an immigrant teenager in a new country. She and her family moved to Manitoba nine years ago. "When I first moved, I was looking for a space where I could meet new people who were going through the same things I was going through. I wanted to know, how can I better succeed here, coming from Nigeria. I was seeking a space like this." Soneye is now attending university, taking Computer Science. "I'm hoping teenagers can feel supported through their journey and know they have a community of people who can support them. We are bringing speakers who have experienced some of these things. I want them to leave the conference empowered. I want them to know there are resources available to them in Winnipeg and Canada."
