Winnipeg has been hit with freezing rain a few times this week, with more expected today.

That can lead to some pretty treacherous driving conditions both in and around the city.

Harold Tabin, owner and operator of A Confidence Driving School in Winnipeg has a few tips on how to prevent your vehicle from sliding in these conditions.

1. Break ahead of time

If you're coming up to a circumstance, make sure you reduce your speed well in advance, prior to making your initial stop.

2. Put the car into neutral

If you feel your vehicle sliding, shift your vehicle into neutral and steer it towards loose snow. This will give your vehicle more traction, allowing it come to stop.

3. Keep an eye on road conditions

Look for discolouration on the road. Even though a road may look bare it could be black ice. Look for sand, salt and loose snow, all things that can help with traction.

4. Drive to the conditions.

Simply put, if the road conditions are not favourable, slow down and drive to the current road conditions.

If you are in a collision, or witness a collision while driving, Tabin says make sure to stop.

"Witnesses are encouraged to write down everything that they see including license plates, time of day, street names, weather conditions and anyone else they see that may have been a witness to the incident," says Tabin.

He adds it is important to pass on your information if you witness a crash, as it will help prove who was at fault, in the end speeding up the claims process.
