It's Road Safety Week in Canada as police look to target dangerous driving behaviors that put other drivers at risk.

You can expect to see more Winnipeg Police and RCMP Manitoba vehicles on the road this week as they crack down on dangerous driving. This year focuses on the "Big 4 Killers" on our roads: impaired driving, failure to wear/improper use of seatbelts, distracted driving, and aggressive driving.

"The point of it is to increase awareness about safe driving behaviors and to also target people with poor driving behaviors," said Constable Tammy Skrabek of the Winnipeg Police Service. "As well, they'll be spreading some programming information and public education along the week."

Constable Skrabek noted that the most common thing people think about for distracted driving is cell phones, but it's any kind of distraction at all. The most recent data says that 8 of 10 crashes are a result of distracted driving.

"It could be as simple as digging through your gym bag, eating your lunch, doing your makeup," said Constable Skrabek. "It's not just using your cell phone or changing the radio dials."

She said the best way to keep yourself and others around you safe is to pay attention. Be aware of your surroundings at all times.

"People don't consider a motor vehicle a form of lethal force but it really is," Constable Skrabek stated. "Accidents can happen at any time."

The Manitoba RCMP says that impaired driving is the single largest factor for traffic deaths, making up a total of 41% of fatal collisions over the past five years. In 46% of fatal collisions, the deceased was either unbuckled or not wearing a helmet.

Speeding was considered a factor in 51% of fatal crashes in the last five years.
