A local volunteer has been serving the Lord and his church community faithfully for the past 52 years.

Jack Johnston has been a familiar face and constant presence at Calvary Temple for the better half of the last century.

Working primarily in the music department, Johnston, 70, has acted as the choir music librarian while performing in the choir himself since 1967. After joining the church the same year, the volunteer wasted no time in getting involved in the work of Calvary Temple.

"I get the music ready for the choir and make sure everything is ready to go for Sunday," Johnston said. He also works closely alongside the music minsiter at the church, who at this time is Richard Hale.

Over the years, Johnston has worked with 15 music ministers, he estimates, a feat few others could boast. But boast Johnston certainly does not.

"It's been quite a journey," Johnston humbly chuckled.

With three services now happening each week at Calvary Temple, Johnston says quite a few hours go into preparing the music for each service, which each feature different songs. "There's quite a diversity in the styles of the music we sing."

The volunteer doesn't see his contributions as hard work, however, and instead enjoys the chance to contribute to his church community and take part in the work of the Lord.

"It's a joy getting everything ready for the choir," he explained. "I think the choir appreciates, and I love working with the choir and doing what I do."

In 52 years, ministers of music aren't the only changes Johnston has seen, but he's taken it all in stride for the love of the church with pure joy.

"Music has changed over the years, and of course I've seen a lot of music," he said, "but I think it's important because I think it's a service to the church, but it's also an opportunity for me to get to know people.

"It's just my way of giving back to the church because the church has done so much for me."
