A woman from Manitoba has died in a head-on collision that police say happened when another vehicle was trying to avoid hitting a truck that was slowing down ahead of it.

RCMP say an SUV was on Highway 9 south of Gimli on Friday afternoon, about two kilometres north of Sandy Hook.

Roads were icy as the SUV attempted to brake for the truck.

Police say the driver manoeuvred left to avoid a collision, but then crashed into an oncoming vehicle.

The two people in the SUV, 43 and 39, survived the crash, but the 61-year-old woman at the wheel of the other vehicle died in hospital.
