A severe thunderstorm watch is in place for a large part of southern Manitoba, including Winnipeg, while a special weather statement is in effect for all of it.

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Winkler, Portage La Prairie, Brandon, Headingly, Winkler and Altona.

A special weather statement was released by Environment Canada for the City of Winnipeg, Steinbach, Winkler, Altona and Portage La Prairie prior to that and remains in effect.

Temperatures continue to sit above 30 degrees across most of Manitoba, posing an elevated risk of heat illnesses. Residents are advised to protect themselves and their families.

Environment Canada suggestsed frequent breaks from the heat, drinking plenty of water, and never leaving a kid or pet in a car for any length of time.

As of 2:40 p.m., Winnipeg has set a new record for June 2, posting 33.0 degrees, beating the old record of 32.2 degrees set in 1948.
