Most of southeastern Manitoba is sitting under a special weather statement from Environment Canada again today.

Environment Canada has issued the following statement:

Above seasonal temperatures are expected over southern Manitoba this weekend as a hot and humid air mass moves into the province. Although temperatures and humidex values are expected to remain below heat warning criteria for southern Manitoba, it is important to remember that extreme heat affects everyone. The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.

With the 50th Canada Summer Games set to kick off this weekend, it is important to remember to drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty and stay in the shade or a cool place when able to do so.

In addition to the heat and humidity, scattered thunderstorms are likely to develop Saturday afternoon across much of southern Manitoba. Current indications are that some of these thunderstorms may become severe over the course of the day. These thunderstorms will taper off Saturday evening, but the potential for more active weather will continue across the region on both Sunday and Monday.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to ec.storm.ec@canada.ca or tweet reports using #MBStorm.
