Special Olympics Canada is sending athletes to the 2017 Canada Summer Games to compete in athletics and swimming. One of the swimmers is Mark Teixeira.

A handful of athletes with Special Olympics Canada have been send to the Canada Summer Games.

Teixeira was one of four Manitobans selected to be on the provincial team for swimming. He will be swimming the front crawl.

"[I've been swimming] maybe seven years," said the 21-year-old Teixeira. "My favorite part of swimming [is the] front crawl."

"That's a huge honor," Teixeira's coach, Melissa Diamond, said about his selection to the team. "Such a small [number] of athletes selected.

"He has a passion for swimming . . . and that's what you look for in an athlete."

She said if you have never seen one of these athletes compete, you are missing out. You can catch Teixeira and the rest of the Special Olympics athletes at the University of Manitoba Stadium in week one or at the Pan Am Pool in week two.
