A local six-year-old has raised over $2,000 in support of her neighbour who was recently diagnosed with cancer.

Kezia Heppner held a slime fundraiser, raising $2,021 for South Central Cancer Resource in honour of her friend and neighbour Elmer, whom she calls her "second grandpa."

"I just like slime and I want to help people," Heppner explains. "Elmer has cancer, and he's so special he's like a second grandpa ... I've known him my whole life."

She says one of her favourite things is helping Elmer in his garden.

"We feel very proud of Kezia," mom Chantelle says. "She has a big heart and is a very caring person."

Chantelle notes their neighbours have always made an effort to be good friends and take an interest in their kids.

"We're very lucky to have them in our lives," she says.

"Cancer is a scary word for a six year old," Chantelle says. "But we talked about it and told her he would be going to Winnipeg for treatment, and that we'd just have to pray for him and do our best to help him out ... I guess that's how this fundraiser came about."

She adds the community rallied behind the cause: "We were very overwhelmed by people's generosity."

Coral Doherty of the South Central Cancer Resource says they were touched by Heppner's heart and support.
