While many people think of Italy when pizza is mentioned, Argentina has some of the world's best pizza, according to Winnipeg restaurant owner.

Corrientes Argentine Pizzeria is a family-owned and operated restaurant with Alfonso Maury at the helm.

Maury is originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and brings his home country's flavour to the pizzas made in house.

"Corrientes is a big avenue, very famous for the best pizza in Buenos Aires," says Maury.

Over 50 per cent of the population in Argentina is from Italy, according to Maury.

"We have a very strong Italian culture in our food and that mixed with South American cuisine creates the Argentinian pizza."

Corrientes is run by Maury, his wife, son, and daughter. Before they opened Corrientes in 2015, Maury was the chef at Hermanos in Winnipeg.

"My son is like my sous chef and my daughter was the manager up until a couple of months ago when she finished University and now she works half and half," he says.

The owner is grateful that since the level red restriction was announced for Winnipeg, people started ordering more takeout.

One of their signature pizzas even has peanut butter as a topping, alongside bacon, cajun chicken breast topped with mozzarella and cheddar cheese.

"We have the famous Steve B pizza. When I was the chef in another restaurant, one of my cooks who is also a great human being, is a big fan of peanut butter. When I came to Corrientes I told him I'd make a pizza in his honour."

The restaurant also serves 16 different types of empanadas and salads.
