After breaking two records, the Red River Mutual Trail has finally closed for 2018.

The warm weather and the significant winter storm caused the Red River Mutual Trail to shut down for the 2018 season, after enjoying a very successful season.

"Thanks to all those who made great use of the trail this year," said Paul Jordan, The Forks chief executive officer in a statement. "It's exciting to see the city come to life and convene on the rivers in the wintertime - it's something that makes Winnipeg really exceptional."

The trail opened on December 22, 2017, and remained open for 72 days, the longest it has ever been open. Last year, the trail only remained open for 33 days due to numerous closures. The previous record was 68 days back in 2015.

The RRMT stretched from St. Vital Bridge to Arlington Bridge, making it 10 kilometres in total. It was the first time the trail was longer than 6.5 kilometrees since 2009 when the trail stretched 9.38 kilometres. 2018 set a new record for Winnipeg. The Guinness World Record was taken by Windermere, British Columbia, for a trail that stretched 34 kilometres.

The trail was maintained by 12 crew members and 1011 kilometres were driven by the Olympic Ice Resurfacer. Those crews recovered 43 pucks and 28 smartphones along the trail.

The Forks is no longer maintaining the ice surface and recommends that all stay off the ice. The on-land parks have been closed as well, and another Forks attraction, Ice Castles, is now done for the season.
