Thanks to your input, important decisions about a new bridge for Arlington have already been made.

The City of Winnipeg has announced the new design of a bridge for Arlington to make travel easier for traffic, emergency access, easier walking, and easier cycling. It also will help beautify the city through new public art additions and will provide opportunity towards future use or development of the extra land near the bridge.

This new bridge will include separated cycle lanes and sidewalks on both sides of the bridge with an extra car lane for traffic.

Currently, buses are unable to utilize the bridge. This causes the need for transit routes to cross at McPhillips or Salter. The new bridge will be able to support buses and will improve transit times. Emergency vehicles are also unable to use the current bridge, so this new one will allow for quicker emergency response times to those in the neighbourhood of Arlington.

The City of Winnipeg also says they will be improving roads, sidewalks, and intersections around Arlington. The current bridge was built at an incline which can be hard for parent pedestrians attempting to cross with strollers or wagons. This new bridge is promised to be less steep and will include more protection for pedestrians and cyclists. The wider sidewalks will be able to accommodate wheelchairs and those with mobility issues as well.

Construction is estimated to begin sometime in 2018. The bridge will take approximately 5 years to complete. Decommissioning is expected to happen in 2024.

On February 8 a public information session will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the North Centennial Recreation and Leisure Centre. It's a drop-in session and will have a presentation beginning at 6:00 p.m.This will give the public a chance to discover what the City received as feedback, learn how this feedback was utilized in the bridge's design, watch the created project videos, meet with the project team, ask any questions, and enjoy snacks as well as activities.

In early Fall of 2017, over 500 submissions were received regarding the bridge design. The short survey on the city's website is still available to those who wish to provide further input. Contact can also be made concerning the bridge by calling 204-928-8691 or emailing Arlington@winnipeg.ca.
