The start of February means 'I Love to Read Month' for elementary schools across Manitoba.

The month of February is considered 'I Love to Read Month' for almost every elementary school across the province. Many schools have celebrity guests come in and read the students a story and answer questions about reading.

"It is great for building learning and reading skills," said Jeri-Anne Giesbrecht, librarian at Winnipeg Mennonite Elementary and Middle School Katherine Friesen Campus (WMEMS). "I know the younger years teachers, they love it. They see great gains in the children with their reading ability."

Giesbrecht says that during the month of February, kids are notably more excited to take books out and read. She says there is more traffic in the library during the month as the school focuses on hard-copy books, rather than e-books.

"We love to promote regular, old-fashioned reading," Giesbrecht laughed.

Older grades join younger grades during the month and read with them and Giesbrecht said that parents get involved as well, which really improves a child's reading. She even said that parents reading a book to their kids is just as important as them reading it for themselves.

"I think there is just such an awareness of how reading is important in our everyday life," Giesbrecht said about the impact the month has.

'I Love to Read Month' runs until the end of February.
