Music faculties across Canada, including the University of Manitoba, will join together this weekend to celebrate life and hope.

The Mysterious Barricades Concert series is a continuous performance by a number of musicians in 13 cities. It will start tomorrow at sunrise in St. John's, N.L. at Memorial University and will work its way across the country, wrapping up in Victoria at sunset.

Winnipeg's time slot runs from 4-5 p.m at the The Desautels Faculty Vocal Arts Room at the University of Manitoba, led by concert organizer Laura Loewen.

A professor with the U of M's Faculty of Music, Mel Braun, says the series started after a colleague in the music teaching community, Beth Turnbull, lost her husband to suicide.

"This affected a lot of us and as a larger community we wanted to offer something that went in the direction of hope and healing," Braun said. "Quite often people just don't want to acknowledge stuff because of what it might mean for them but more people are starting to understand that this is part of who we are, and the more we share this stuff and talk about it, the more we can reach out for help and find solutions."

The concert, which takes place tomorrow, will also be live-streamed at mysteriousbarricades.org.
