A farm boy from southern Manitoba has become a professional race car driver and is now looking to bring a new style of racing to Manitoba.

The first ever Slingshot Cup is scheduled to start today at Gimli Motorsport Park. The unique 3-wheeled vehicle has never had a race like this anywhere else in the world. The guy bringing it here is only the fourth Canadian ever to finish a race through the streets of Monte Carlo, which he did during a Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend.

A very important part of Richert's journey has been his faith. "My career as a race car driver and my relationship with God are 100 percent intertwined with each other.

"I know my purpose isn't to become a really fast race car driver, it's what's taking place in the process," Richert continued.

Richert tries to live by example, but he knows you need to put words behind it sometimes. Fast cars, money, and women, he said, are prevalent in the industry.

"Just by being a little bit different than that, it immediately causes people to ask questions and gives you the opportunity to begin a conversation," Richert said. He also believes his journey from the farm to the track is a testament to God's work in his life.

David Richert wants to take the next step in his journey into motorsports and he's starting out with bringing a brand new race to the world.

"First one ever," Richert said about the Slingshot Cup. "Manitoba is the test market for the Slingshot Racing Cup."

The winner of the Cup at the end of the season will get t he chance to come to Europe and drive Richert's very own vehicle on one of the European tracks. During the season, people have a chance to win a spot on Richert's own Slingshot during the actual race.
