The west side of the Louise Bridge is closed after photos and videos showing holes in the sidewalk, and the Red River below it, were posted online.

A nearby resident, Sharon Johnson, posted the photos and video on Sunday. She was walking by when she noticed the river below the sidewalk.

"I was taking photographs, and sort of actively looking at things, and I was just walking along and suddenly noticed I could see the river through the (sidewalk)."

Johnson says it was alarming to look down where she was about to step and see a goose float down the river below her. She said the hole was about three inches wide and seven inches long.

She made the post in order to warn others before an accident happened. She also phoned 311 and reported it to the City of Winnipeg.

City crews have since barricaded the west side of the sidewalk. However, there is no word on when repairs might take place.

Johnson, who is a resident of North Point Douglas and involved with organizations in the neighbourhood, says issues like this just compounds issues that North Point Douglas is already facing.

She says that just the day before at a community meeting they were discussing those issues.

"We were talking about the other things going on. Our health crisis and our homelessness crisis that we have - that we're facing in our neighbourhood. And we don't need more things to be up against, you know? To not even be able to walk alongside the sidewalk of the bridge in our neighbourhood for fear of falling in the river is just another level of our safety being compromised in this neighbourhood."

Johnson feels that residents of Point Douglas already has a population that is more vulnerable than most and so faces a number of safety issues already. "We don't need to be up against city infrastructure on top of everything else."
