The Manitoba Institue of Trades and Technology (MITT) hosted an event today, showcasing computer games created by elementary students from Manitoba.

Coding Quest is a curriculum-based program that aims to bring computer coding skills into grade 4, 5 and 6 classrooms. It teaches Scratch coding, and hopes to address the increasing role of technology within society today by equipping children with essential 21st century skills.

Cohen, an aspiring coder, shared that "getting to actually code it, and playing the finished game," was his favourite part of the experience.

The process also taught students patience The most frustrating part of Cohen's experience? "Half of my game got deleted! I pressed the wrong button."

Lauren Friesen, who teaches grade 4 at Royal School, had limited knowledge of coding before she began to teach the program. "I had the best group of kids. They helped me along, and we learned together."

Haley and Sophie, grade 5, did not know anything about coding before the program. "It was a little difficult, but it was very fun," Sophie said.

"It was a great experience."
