A fire at an apartment building in Charlsewood resulted in one person being taken to hospital on Wednesday afternoon.

The City of Winnipeg says in a release that the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in an eight-storey apartment building on Hendon Avenue just before 5 p.m.

Firefighters initially attacked the fire from the exterior of the building. Once conditions improved, they were able to enter the suite where the fire originated to extinguish remaining hotspots. Damage was mostly contained to that suite.

Firefighters ventilated smoke from the building to ensure it was safe for residents to re-occupy their suites.

Most residents of the building were able to self-evacuate. Firefighters assisted a few residents in evacuating their suites.

On-scene paramedics assessed five individuals. One of them was transported to hospital in stable condition.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available.
