At least three families are without a home following a fire Tuesday afternoon in Crestview.

The fire broke out shortly before 12:30 p.m. in a three-storey apartment complex in the 3500 block of Portage Avenue.

When crews arrived, they found smoke coming from the building. Firefighters entered and used hoses to fight the fire from inside.

Some residents were home when the fire started. Firefighters asked them to shelter in place while they worked to extinguish the fire.

No one was injured.

"Sadly, three families lost their place. Their apartments, along with all their personal belongings, are destroyed," said one resident on Facebook. "One of the families is new to Canada and is a family of 5. Another single lady who worked her whole life to make her apartment comfortable. She was still making payments on her bedroom suite."

The City of Winnipeg's Emergency Social Services team attended the scene to assist the displaced residents in finding temporary accommodations.

The community is now rallying together to figure out a way to help the affected families.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
