While the church is only used for special events, those events are always unique and well-thought out.

This weekend, the Chortitz Church in Randolph, Manitoba, will be putting on a special event in celebration of Pentecost.

"Like the original Pentecost experience in the first century, this event is about good news," Ernie Braun, a member of the Chortitz Heritage Church Committee, described. "And the vehicle of that good news is language."

Just as all the people listening to Paul heard the Gospel in their own language, Chotitz Church wants to try and capture what that would have felt like.

The event will include a speaker and singing, but will also include many of the languages Mennonites have spoken over the years. These include Dutch, French, Low German, High German, Polish, Hebrew/Greek, Russian/Ukrainian, Spanish, and English. The reading will be Acts 2:1-47.

"Language has historically been so important to Mennonites," Braun said. He also made special note of a time of fellowship that would follow the event, which included coffee and rhubarb platz.

Braun said the church has helped shape a lot of southern Manitoba, including the area hosting the areas first post office and bank. It's also the oldest remaining church in the east reserve.

The event takes place on June 3 at 7:00 p.m. at the Chortitz Church in Randolph. Everyone is welcome to attend.
