Children dressed as fairies are spreading cheer in Moncton, New Brunswick with hopes that joy will also reach the rest of the country.

Just over a month ago, a group of mothers started up a Facebook group called the Doorstep Fairy program to boost the morale of children in their community amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lindsay O'Blenis is one of the creators of the group, she says it's important to think about children's mental health and how they're handling this situation.

"Our children have gone through so much. They have put their lives on pause without fully understanding why they've done it," explained O'Blenis. "They have sacrificed friendships and school, and this is a really important part of their lives and they're missing all of that."

O' Blenis says the response from the community has been overwhelming. Since starting the group on May 11, over 700 children in Moncton alone have been visited.

"I feel that we are teaching our children that it's okay to give without receiving something back," said O'Blenis. "Sometimes the best gift you can give yourself is the gift of giving and bringing joy to someone else."

Lindsay says they are spreading the word about their group in hopes that other provinces across Canada will hop on board and start something similar. She encourages those who are interested to contact herself or any of the other administrators on the page.

"If there is anything we can take from this pandemic, it's that we all need to take a pause and take a breath and be grateful for the little things we have and enjoy the simple things," O'Blenis explained.
