A Colorado Low is continuing to push through Manitoba, and a number of warnings remain in the province including snowfall and blizzard warnings.

A snowfall warning remains in effect for the City of Winnipeg and many other areas. A total of 20 centimetres of snow is still expected for most of the Red River Valley and eastern Manitoba by the time the system tapers off on Saturday evening.

Wind will be a big concern Saturday, especially outside Winnipeg. Inside the Perimeter Highway, wind gusts are expected to be between 50 and 70 km/h. Environment Canada says, though, that visibility will not be impacted too badly in Winnipeg.

However, outside the City of Winnipeg, many areas are under a winter storm warning because of the wind. Gusts will also range between 50 and 70 km/h, but visibility is expected to be seriously reduced.

Lake Winnipeg and Lake Manitoba also have blizzard warnings in effect. Environment Canada recommends avoiding heading out on to the lakes today for activities such as ice fishing.

Temperatures will be in the -16 to -19 range throughout the region. With wind, many areas will experience wind chill values between -25 and -30 throughout the day, Saturday.

Travel not recommended

All highways in Manitoba are open as of 7 a.m., however, travel is expected to become difficult as winds pick up in the day.

Environment Canada recommends postponing non-essential travel on highways in affected regions today.

South of the Canada/U.S. border the North Dakota government says travel is not recommended from the border to Grand Forks on I-29. The 1-29 is closed from Grand Forks to South Dakota.
