A large fire in downtown Winnipeg is significantly impacting air quality.

Fire crews have been battling a fire at the Windsor Hotel on Garry St. since 10:45 a.m.

The City of Winnipeg issued a statement around 12:30 p.m., warning people in the area to take precautions.

"Residents should close their doors and windows to prevent exposure to the smoke," the statement says.

"Building owners or operators in downtown Winnipeg are encouraged to turn off building systems that draw air from outside."
