Volunteers with the Bear Clan had their hands full this weekend taking care of the city.

A number of makeshift and dangerous weapons were taken off the street by the Bear Clan over the long weekend.

"We take weapons like that off the street on a daily basis," said James Favel, executive director of Bear Clan Patrol Inc.

He noted that the weapons from the long weekend were unique, however, because of the large quantity of the haul all coming from the North and West Ends of Winnipeg.

"West Broadway, they got an axe bigger than the one that was on my table," Favel said.

The executive director continued, "It's just getting crazier and crazier out there. When you consider that we took two full-sized splitting axes off the streets this weekend, that's pretty intense."

Volunteers and members of the Bear Clan seldom simply seize items or weapons from individuals. Instead, Favel says they will typically barter with people to get dangerous weapons off the streets.

"Most times they keep them, not so they can do damage to somebody, just to protect themselves."

The work that the Bear Clan does, Favel says, would not be possible without the help of their volunteers, particularly over the long weekend.

"They worked every day including two shifts on Friday and Saturday," he said.

"It really speaks to the level of commitment my volunteers have."
