A transit driver is being recognized for helping a man in a wheelchair cross a busy intersection, but the union says these gestures happen more often than people know.

Early Saturday morning, Kristi Arbuckle noticed a man in a wheelchair attempting to cross the road. Arbuckle shared on Facebook that at around 6:30 in the morning, a man crossing an intersection at Arlington Street and Portage Avenue was struggling to make it to the other end.

Arbuckle says that the man was slowly making his way across when the lights changed and was almost hit by a truck.

"The man in the wheelchair was already one lane into traffic when I got to the light and he was crossing while Portage Ave had a green light. Three of the four lanes were stopped but a truck came zooming through in the open lane and almost hit him," Arbuckle says.
