A fire in the attic of a home on Gordon Avenue may have been caused by lightning this morning.

According to the City of Winnipeg, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Services (WFPS) responded this morning to reports of a fire in the 100 block of Gordon Avenue.

The fire in the single-family home, a one-and-a-half storey, was determined by crews to be primarily located in the attic area, and an offensive attack was launched once crews arrived on scene.

Significant fire, smoke, and water damage was suffered by the home before the fire was declared under control at 8:47 a.m.

No injuries were reported from the fire, and all occupants of the home self-evacuated before WFPS arrived.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but the City says that primary observations have led to the theory that the fire may have started due to a lightning strike in the course of the thunderstorm this morning.

At this time, no damage estimates are available.
