Take Pride Winnipeg wants people to hit the streets this weekend to clean up garbage and debris.

Communities across the country are taking part in the #CleanCanadaTogether campaign on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018, to mark World Cleanup Day.

According to Take Pride Winnipeg, 23 communities in Canada have signed up since the campaign launched in 2017, with over 302,000 people picking up over 621 tonnes of litter.

"We're wanting everyone across the country to pick up litter before the snow flies," Take Pride Winnipeg executive director Tom Ethans said. "We have communities from across the country that are all excited to get out there and make a difference."

Ethans says there is no formal registration for the campaign, and people can simply get a group of people together to clean up litter. He says, however, that if people wanting to start a group contact Take Pride Winnipeg they will be provided with the equipment they need to make their cleanup easier.

"We provide garbage bags, gloves and even litter pickers if people need them," Ethans said. "We really need everyone to get out and do their part to make our city and our province clean and beautiful."

Ethans says other things Take Pride Winnipeg wants people to think about on World Cleanup Day are reducing their reliance on plastic bags, properly disposing of cigarette butts and being more mindful of our surroundings.

"Cigarette butts account for 30 per cent of litter on our streets," Ethans said. "We need people to understand that people shouldn't be throwing their cigarette butts on the ground."

"When people see litter while they're walking or jogging they can pick it up," he continued. "Make it part of your every day routine to pick up pieces of litter that you see and help keep our province litter free."
