A senior from Winnipeg is dead after hiking a popular mountain route in Banff National Park.

RCMP say the man was hiking alone on Mount Temple on Thursday, September 19, when he was reported overdue by other hikers.

Police say Parks Canada dispatched a helicopter to search the rugged terrain and found the man unresponsive.

Searchers were forced to leave due to fading light and returned to recover the man on Friday.

The Winnipeg man was 70-years-old, RCMP say, but will not be releasing his name. RCMP did not say how the man died.
