RMCP Manitoba says a woman may have been under the influence of drugs at the time of her Monday-night transgressions.

On Monday night in Portage la Prairie, RCMP officers were called to 6th Avenue NE in the city. RCMP says they received a report that a woman was trying to steal a taxi.

When arriving after the 8:40 p.m. call, the 21-year-old woman was in the front passenger seat of the running taxi.

"She was yelling through the windows in an incoherent manner," RCMP Manitoba says in a statement. "She had damaged the dashboard and made a mess of documents and items."

At this time, her behaviour indicated to officers that she may be under the influence of drugs.

Officers then told the woman to exit the vehicle, which she did not comply with. Reaching inside the cab, an officer tried pulling her out, but instead, the woman tried to scratch the officer's face. The officer was able to remove the suspect from the seat, placing her on the ground to arrest her.

"At that point, the female grabbed the officer’s hand and bit down hard on the officer’s fingers."

Despite the bite, officers successfully put handcuffs on the woman, placing her inside a police cruiser.

The taxi driver is uninjured.

The woman, from Winnipeg, is now facing Assaulting a Peace Officer, Resisting Arrest, and Mischief charges. RCMP Manitoba says more charges could be coming.
