An officer from Portage la Prairie is set to appear in court following a string of charges.

On November 4 at 10:19 a.m. RCMP officers were called to Oxford Common Street in Portage la Prairie. Officers responding to the call located an off-duty Manitoba First Nations Police Service officer whom they believed to be involved in an alleged assault.

RCMP officers arrested the suspect, bringing him to the RCMP detachment. After investigating, officers brought the matter to the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) the next day, triggering an investigation.

After investigating, IIU's Civilian Director Zane Tessler determined there are reasonable grounds to believe a criminal offence occurred. Tessler is authorizing the suspect to be charged with assault, mischief and breach of undertaking under sections, 266, 430(4) and 145(4)(a) of the Criminal Code.

On Wednesday, the suspect was released from custody under an undertaking. He will appear in courts in Portage la Prairie on February 9.
