A six year old Grunthal boy was selected to join the Winnipeg Jets as an assistant trainer on Friday.

The opportunity arose through the team’s Junior Trainer program which allows a child the chance to shadow a team trainer.

“I got Josh Morrissey’s puck,” proclaims Jaxx Kornelson, winner of the contest.

“Josh came up to Jaxx on the bench and told him he was going to show him a quick trick,” offers Jaxx’s mother Tiffany Kornelson, “so he showed him a trick and then handed the puck to Jaxx.”

The celebrity athlete’s special gesture was made even more impressive by being the young fan’s favourite player. “Because he’s cool,” Jaxx concluded concisely when asked why he like Morrissey most.

Morrissey wasn’t the only celebrity that was interested in interaction either, as Patrik Laine also initiated contact with the boy. “As soon as they came out, Laine came up to him and gave him a fist bump,” shares Kornelson, describing the moment as “kind of surreal”.

“I was grinning from ear to ear,” she says about seeing her son on an NHL bench with his heroes.

Jaxx was born with cystic fibrosis and so a charitable organization called Dream Factory sent him on a holiday to Disney World.  Kornelson shares how months later, personnel at the organization remembered Jaxx and his wishes to one day meet the Winnipeg Jets.  As a result, he was awarded the opportunity to mingle with his heroes.

Despite the challenges of his ailment, Jaxx has not given up his dream to become an NHL goalie and one day play for the Winnipeg Jets. He will have to change positions next year, however, as he currently plays right wing for his Grunthal Red Wings.

Along with the interactions and special seating, Jaxx received his very own Jets’ jersey and excitedly shared how he was allowed to throw pucks onto the ice to start the pregame practice.

All in all, a “pretty cool” night for the young fan.
