The first female police officers in the history of the Winkler Police Service are expected to start this year.

The earliest law enforcement officially started in Winkler with the hire of their own constable on June 16, 1906. The following 111 years saw growth in their department to meet the growing city's needs, but has not included female officers until now.

The department has been actively searching for 15 years and Police Chief Rick Hiebert says they're pleased to announce two of the three recent hires are female.

"Just overall you want a balance in your police service," Hiebert says. "We're so excited."

Kendra Derksen and Megan Fallis along with Travis Krahn have accepted offers for employment.

Derksen and Krahn are both Winkler natives.

"It's always nice to see local kids grow up here and aspire to join their police service," Hiebert says.

All three will begin attending the Saskatchewan Police College at the end of July and are expected to start in Winkler in December.
