A number of significant wildland fires occurred Monday afternoon and throughout the night around Winnipeg.

Four significant wildland fire events happened between 5:00 p.m. Monday and 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday. The fires kept fire crews quite busy.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) attended a fire at Roblin Boulevard and the Perimeter Highway and were able to keep it under control. No injuries or damages occurred.

A detached garage caught fire after a wildland fire started on Victoria Row after 6:00 p.m. The cause is under investigation, and fire crews were able to stop the fire before it reached a riding lawn mower parked in a shed that was burnt.

WFPS were forced to evacuate local businesses as a precaution after attending a fire on Day Street. No damage occurred and no injuries were reported.

Finally, just after midnight, WFPS went to Transcona Bioreserve on Whiteshell Avenue. Crews located hotspots with the help of the Winnipeg Police Service's Air-1 and got the fire under control quickly, with no structures taking damage. One firefighter had minor injuries that were treated on site.

All open-air fires are prohibited inside Winnipeg.

"These are unprecedented, tinder-dry conditions, and we urge members of the community to work with us and refrain from starting any open-air fires, even in approved receptacles such as fire pits," said WFPS Deputy Chief Tom Wallace. Barbecues can be used as long as they are natural gas run.

WFPS encourage residents to immediately phone 911 if they spot an active fire.
