A vigil was held yesterday at a monument to missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Winnipeg to mark the eighth anniversary of the last time Tanya Nepinak was seen.

Nepinak's aunt Sue Caribou says it gets harder every year because she feels people are forgetting about her niece. Nepinak was last seen on September 13, 2011.

The woman's body has never been found and charges that were laid in 2013 against a man were later dropped. He was, however, convicted for manslaughter in the deaths of two other women.

Nepinak was originally from Pine Creek First Nation. She disappeared while walking to a pizza restaurant close to her Winnipeg home on Sherbrook Street.

Caribou says she can't believe Nepinak is dead. Instead, she believes it's likely she was a victim of human trafficking.
