Crews are mopping up after a fire Thursday morning completely destroyed a building in the North End.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a vacant one-and-a-half-storey multi-family residence in the 200 block of Salter Street around 4:20 a.m.

The WFPS says that when crews arrived on scene, they encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the building.

A defensive attack was initially launched, but once some of the flames were knocked down crews were able to transition to an offensive attack. The fire was declared under control at 5:58 a.m.

Crews completed a search of the structure and no occupants were found. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Damage estimates are not available at this time, but the structure is expected to be a complete loss.

Traffic was closed on Satlter street for several hours, but has since reopened.
