Despite a malfunction that affected traffic in Winnipeg on Tuesday, the Transportation Management Centre in continues to improve traffic flow around the city.

On Tuesday, a malfunction affected one out of every seven traffic lights in the city, leading to some delays which were made worse by construction. However, the problem has been solved and the Transportation Management Centre (TMC) continues to improve flow throughout Winnipeg.

"The purpose of the update was just scheduled maintenance and ironed out some bugs," Ryan Patrick, surpoviser of the TMC said of the update that caused the malfunction. "We [can get] more historical information and it gives us more capability to troubleshoot each intersection."

The TMC controls 650 signalized intersections, according to Patrick, with the ability to control each one in real-time.

"This allows us to see what each individual intersection is doing . . . and also make some timing adjustments," Patrick said.

He said that Portage Avenue has already been coordinated, so you should see more green lights on your drive. They also have the ability to change the lights for both the morning and afternoon rush hours.

"Since we've been online, we've seen [a decrease] in incidents such as major collisions," Patrick said. "We've been able to alleviate the pressure points."

We won't be able to alleviate all traffic congestion, Patrick pointed out. He said using the app Waze will help commuters, as the TMC updates the app in real-time and it will dynamically reroute your drive home to get you back to your family faster.

Patrick said that when you report an incident on Waze, the TMC takes a look at it and tries to amend the situation as soon as possible.
