Three people are dead and Winnipeg Police Services were stretched to the limit after a violent weekend in Winnipeg.

14-year-old dies in stabbing

The WPS says the first incident occurred at a Halloween party Saturday night around 10:45.

Police were called to a report of a stabbing in the 100 block of Kinver Avenue. When they arrived they found two female victims. An 18-year-old and 14-year-old were both taken to hospital in critical condition.

The 18-year-old has since been upgraded to stable condition. Unfortunately, the 14-year-old succumbed to her injuries.

Constable Rob Carver of the WPS says that police had "a number of people in custody" on Sunday afternoon. When Carver spoke to media he did not believe that arrests had yet been made, but that police had talked to almost everyone who is of interest in the case.

Carver says there were a number of people at the party, but he's not aware of the relationship, if any, between the two victims.

"I think a 14-year-old being murdered is absolutely horrible," Carver says. "It kind of took my breath away this morning, and I know for investigators it makes it very tough. I can't speak for family and friends, but it's horrible. Somehow it's worse when someone that young loses their life - we acknowledge that. It's terrible."

The girl's death is the 34th homicide of 2019.

The investigation is continuing by members of the Homicide Unit. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

Double homicide

Just a few hours later, at 2:30 a.m. Sunday, police responded to a medic call where two males were reported down in the rear lane of Ross Avenue at Isabel Street. Officers located two adult males suffering from serious upper-body injuries.

Both victims were transported to hospital in critical condition, however, both have since succumbed to their injuries.

Carver says there isn't much information that can be shared at this point. However, he says, it doesn't appear it was a random targetting. He also says that investigators have not confirmed yet, but that there is a potential it was gang-related.

Their deaths are the 35th and 36th homicides of 2019.

The investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
