The heroics of three men from Winnipeg's Pine Street in World War I are being told in a new way.

15-year-old Heidi Wright is a grade 11 student at Technical Vocational High School in Winnipeg. She says that her favourite classes are history and music. It makes sense, then, that the teen decided to write a song about Corporal Leo Clarke, Sergeant-Major Frederick William Hall, and Lieutenant Robert Shankland.

The three men all grew up in the 700 block of Winnipeg's Pine Street. Not only did all of them serve in World War I, but all three of them received the country's highest honour for bravery in combat, the Victoria Cross.

Pine Street was renamed Valour Road in their honour, in 1925.

Wright says she was driving past the mural in the men's honour at the corner of Ellice & Valour when inspiration struck. She says the story of three war heroes from the same block was a story that needed to be told, and so she started work on the song.

"I think we should remember more, and the song is just simply a reminder," she says. "I think it will have a lot of meaning for the people of Winnipeg."
