A construction incident has led Manitoba's Medical Officer of Health to recommend staying out of the water near Gimli.

During a construction-related incident on Center Street, Gimli, the main sewer pipe was damaged. This led to untreated waste entering lake Winnipeg.

The Chief Medical Officer of Health recommends staying out of the water at three Gimli beaches, including Loni Beach, Gimli Public Beach, and the area near the Viking Statue and Moonlight Bay.

The province says beaches were sampled for E. coli on Wednesday and results are expected late Thursday. All three beaches will be monitored daily.

Manitoba says that this event will not affect other beaches in the Lake Winnipeg South Basin and the waste-water treatment system has been repaired.

The warning will be lifted once water quality testing shows there is no risk for swimmers.
