Mandatory evacuation notices have been lifted across much of Stuartburn as the worst of the floodwaters flow downstream, however, the RM’s problems are far from over.

While the situation is looking up for most homes in Arbakka, Zhoda, and the Vita area, Chief Administrative Officer Lucie Maynard says those in the northwestern corner near De Salaberry are now getting hit by the same high waters. She says two homes in that region were given their own evacuation orders this past weekend.

Despite orders in place, Maynard says most residents have elected to stay back during this time to defend their homes. “Even though they were given mandatory evacuation notices, there are not many that chose to leave.”Meanwhile, Maynard says her municipality’s priority continues to be freeing up roadway access.

“I would say a good three-quarters of our roads are affected in some way,” she states. “Some remain completely impassable.”

Specifically, municipal crews are working to restore services to Franko Road. Once that passageway opens up, Maynard says evacuations orders for all of Zhoda can be lifted.

At this point, Maynard estimates flood-related damages will set her municipality back roughly $750,000, a number that could be made worse if the rainy forecast holds true. She adds there is no word yet on whether the province will be offering the RM any form of financial support.
