An iconic tree in Winnipeg's Whittier Park has Dutch Elm disease, but it's not going to be completely removed. 

They can't save the tree but they can save the trunk.

The trunk of the elm tree has become an important symbol for residents of Saint Boniface as well as for Festival du Voyageur will be turned into a public art piece.

Festival is putting out a call to Manitoba artists -- those who are from here or are living here - who think they can make an art piece that will transform the tree into a legacy.. The festival says given its mandate, the art piece should be inspired by and celebrate the rich heritage of the region and the community.

To apply as an artist, applications must be in by 4pm April 21. The winning proposal will be announced to the public by the beginning of June.
