Spring break is great for kids and great for commuters, according to the Winnipeg Transportation Centre.

Traffic volume in Winnipeg has dropped fairly drastically because of spring break. With no school and many families either relaxing at home or on vacation, the brand new Winnipeg Transportation Centre (WTC) is seeing a drop in rush hour traffic.

"I would estimate about 30 percent less on the roads," said Michael Cantor from WTC. "We can see through our cameras that there is less traffic on the roads."

Throughout spring break, traffic volumes aren't expected to change much.

"I don't expect traffic to be much different throughout the week," Cantor said. "Friday might be much lower, as Friday tends to be."

The City of Winnipeg has also partnered with Waze, a community-based traffic and navigation app, to see where trouble spots in the city are in an effort to speed up the daily commutes.
