Looks like those solar glasses and pinhole cameras will have to wait until 2023 to be used in Winnipeg.

For those hoping the clouds would break just in time for the solar eclipse, Natalie Hasell from Environment Canada has bad news.

"We are under the influence of this low pressure system and it's going to stick around all day today," Hasell said.

"Unfortunately no, we are not going to have clear enough skies to see the eclipse."

Hasell said that you will notice the sky darken as the moon makes it's way across the sun, plus the Manitoba Museum will still be streaming the eclipse live starting at 11:30 a.m.

You can also watch it online with NASA.

The next solar eclipse will be an annular one that is partially visible in Winnipeg October 14, 2023. The next total solar eclipse is April 8, 2024 and it will be partially visible from Winnipeg as well.

The closest Winnipeg will get to a complete solar eclipse over the next 50 years is a 92% eclipse on July 1, 2057. You'll also be able to catch the next lunar eclipse on January 31, 2018, which won't require any fancy glasses.
