After a police cruiser collided with another car and a building while responding to a weapons call, Winnipeg Police are reminding people to be aware and safe when driving around emergency vehicles.

Constable Jay Murray says it's easy for people to zone out and lose focus when doing anything, including driving.

He says, however, that it's too early to tell whether or not that played a role in Saturday's collision that sent four people - including the two police officers - to hospital.

"The incident itself is just kind of a reminder of the risks we face when we respond to high priority calls," Murray said. "It's the same risk paramedics and firefighters face."

As simple as it sounds, Murray says the best thing you can do is try to keep your focus on your surroundings. He says if you're in the way of an emergency vehicle, slow down and move to the right.

"I can speak from experience, I've seen cars pull to the left and stop or just hit their brakes," Murray said. "Just get over to the right side safely because we don't want anyone else to get into an accident. If you're in heavy traffic you might not be able to move right away, and that's fine, just do your best."

"It's a lot of responsibility to be a driver, so just try to pay attention and keep your eyes on the road."

Murray says the two officers injured in Saturday's incident were treated and released from hospital and the passenger of the other vehicle was unharmed. The driver of that vehicle is in hospital in stable condition.

The investigation is ongoing.
