The Manitoba RCMP want to remind everyone to be on guard against various scams and frauds.

Each year, numerous telephone, mail, text, and internet scams occur throughout Manitoba.

The most recent of these occured August 14, when an individual began going door-to-door in the community of Roblin. The man, claiming to own a driveway paving business outside of Winnipeg, was attempting to sell a driveway sealing product. Upon closer examination of the man, it was discovered that he did not have a business license to operate in the area. Those who were taken in by the fraudster, however, paid for a "sealant" that was simply a thin layer of substance that could be easily washed away.

“We know that some people have lost money because of this scam and want to remind everyone to never hand over money to any individual without doing some due diligence” said Sgt. Paul Manaigre of the Manitoba RCMP in a release.

Manaigre also advises getting a quote in writing, paying a portion of an invoice prior to work being done, viewing previous projects, researching an individuals work online, and calling references if you are planning to have work done on, in, or around your home.

Roblin RCMP are continuing to investigate the incident, and request that anyone within the community who may have been affected in some way contact their detachment by calling (204) 937-8054.
