Authorities do not believe alcohol was a factor in a crash that sent an 85-year-old woman to the hospital.

On Wednesday, June 24, a 64-year-old Winnipeg man and his mother were in a boat that was anchored on Nutimik Lake in the Whiteshell Provincial Park. The two were fishing together that morning.

While fishing, the son noticed a second boat quickly approaching theirs. Suddenly, the second boat struck the man's fishing boat at a 90-degree angle, launching the second boat over the son's boat. The second boat then stopped a short distance away from the crash.

The 85-year-old mother was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

RCMP say they received the call about this incident at 11:10 that morning.

“Operators and occupants of a vessel are reminded that everyone must keep a constant watch to avoid a collision,” said S/Sgt. Robert Chabot, RCMP Inland Water Transport Coordinator. “Vessel operators who do not keep a proper watch may face criminal charges and/or fines.”

Authorities say a 39-year-old man from Elie was driving the second boat and had two Winnipeg passengers, 73-year-old male and 68-year-old female, onboard at the time.

No other injuries are being reported.

Lac du Bonnet RCMP and RCMP marine specialists are investigating the incident.
