Winter is coming to a close, which means a number of snowmobilers will be out over the coming weekends.

The RCMP has seen an alarming amount of snowmobile collisions this year. Since January 20, six lives have been lost while riding snowmobiles.

With some warmer weekends on the way, the RCMP is offering a number of tips to stay safe while driving:

  • Know your abilities and ride within your limits.
  • Use caution, be alert, and slow down when operating on unfamiliar terrain
  • Always ride in groups and let people know where you're going, the route you will be taking, and when you expect to return.
  • Wear the proper protective clothing, including a helmet, to keep you warm and to keep you safe.
  • Be cautious of ice thickness when crossing frozen bodies of water. (The Winnipeg Police Service have recommended that the public stay off all ice)
  • Do not drink and drive a snowmobile.

The forecast on Saturday and Sunday shows temperatures hovering around 0°C.
