The Hutterian Emergency Aquatic Response Team (HEART) is being credited for giving closure to the family of a man who did not survive falling through the ice.

RCMP Manitoba says HEART has retrieved the body of a missing 42-year-old man. The team, along with family members, searched after an incident early Thursday morning.

"Let’s all thank God for His guidance during our search today. Dan Lavoie has been successfully found and recovered. Please continue to pray for his family as they try to cope with this great tragedy," HEART says on Facebook.

The team, known for their rescue work, asked for prayers before heading into the water for their volunteers and strength for the family. They say they are now reflecting on and thankful for God's guidance over their last mission.

At 1 a.m. Thursday, Powerview RCMP officers responded to a call for help after a man attempting to cross Winnipeg River's thin ice on an ATV.  Arriving at the river on a property near Penelope Close, officers saw the 42-year-old clinging to the ice, in the water and calling for help.

A volunteer firefighter and offices grabbed a life jacket and rescue ropes, walking onto the ice, but as they approached the man struggled and went underwater.

The other man with him, a 37-year-old on his own ATV, pulled himself out of the water and survived. He was treated for hypothermia.
