A community is asking for prayers after the military was called in to find a missing man and retrieve two men stranded on a remote island.

RCMP Manitoba says missing 27-year-old Walter Thomas has the keys to a plane, his and his companion's only way off of a remote island in northern Manitoba.

Last seen overnight Monday, Thomas left the men and cabin on Thompson Island on Lake Winnipegosis on a snowmobile. He has not been seen since.

"One of the stranded males was able to make contact with a family member by radio, but communication is difficult. The stranded men have shelter, food, and supplies," RCMP Manitoba says.

Poor weather conditions are concerning RCMP. They searched Thomas's Easterville home despite getting off of the island by snowmobile being not possible. He was not there.

"It is unknown how long Thomas has been gone and out in the elements, with poor weather conditions in the area. Police are very concerned for his well-being."

A CFB Trenton Hercules flew over the island, unable to find Thomas Tuesday night.  The north side of Lake Winnipegosis, from Birch Island to Dawson Bay, is now included in the search area. Easterville and Sapotaweyak Cree Nation are joining RCMP's searches. RCMP Search and Rescue officers will be heading north. Civil Air Search and Rescue Association, a volunteer group, has been deployed.

The stranded men are expected to return home Wednesday.
