Despite some colder temperatures today, Winnipeg Police say that all ice should be considered dangerous unless it has been approved.

Ray Duma is a River Patrol Officer with the Winnipeg Police Service and says that police have been warning people to stay off ice all winter, and that message continues today, even though the ice is fairly thick.

"Our message is that everyone should stay off all ice," Duma said. "That includes retention ponds, ditches, and rivers of course."

Duma says approved areas are OK to be on, which include the Red River Mutual Trail and a few duck ponds around the city, such as St. Vital Park and Assiniboine Park. He says those areas are checked daily.

One of the most dangerous places is retention ponds. Duma says that discharge from a melting event into that pond can erode good ice within a matter of days, making it unsafe.

Duma says there have been a few calls already this year of people falling through the ice, as well as some calls from people saying that there are patches of open ice.

"Hopefully everyone can stay safe and enjoy our winters."
